1. Mirabell Palace and Gardens
The famous Mirabell gardens are located next to the Salzach river. Inside the palace you can view one of the world’s most beautiful wedding halls ‘Marble Hall’. After the palace you can wander through the free gardens that Maria and the Von Trapp children in Sound of Music filmed the song Do Re Mi. These gardens also feature the Pegasus fountain, Dwarf garden and Hedge Theatre.
2. Visit Mozart Sites
The city of Salzburg is home to Mozart’s birthplace and residence along with a dedicated Mozart Square. At Mozart’s birthplace you can visit the museum and see Mozart’s first violin. Whilst in Salzburg, don’t forget to buy the traditional Mozart ball chocolates.
3. View Salzburg from Monchsberg
For panoramic views and the surrounding mountains of Salzburg take the lift up to Monchsberg or you can also choose to climb the steep steps up to the museum.
4. Sound of Music Tour

5. Day Trip to Hallstatt
Hallstatt is a day trip away from Salzburg. Hallstatt is a stunning village located on the Hallstatter See. Hallstatt has many pretty squares, traditional homes all surrounding the peaceful lake. Whilst in Hallstatt you can visit the ice caves and salt mines in the surrounding villages.
6. Gollinger Waterfall
Gollinger Waterfall is Austria’s largest waterfall 76m high. Gollinger is an easy day trip from Salzburg and roughly 40 min on the train. The thundering Gollinger falls is a magical natural monument.
7. Salzburg Fortress (Hohensalzburg)
The Salzburg fortress is a castle that features a tower, state rooms and a torture chamber. One of the major reasons to visit the fortress is the panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
